Overview
This course introduces the foundational principles, tools, and methodologies of Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) as practised today. Students will learn how to collect, analyse, and report on publicly available information from social media, websites, government databases, and the deep web. Practical classroom exercises will ensure that participants can apply the skills taught in real-world collection and research contexts. By the end of the course, students will be able to conduct effective OSINT investigations, apply search techniques and tools, perform basic scraping and data engineering tasks, evaluate the reliability of sources, and present their findings clearly and effectively.
Objective
The course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to become capable open-source collectors. By the end of the training, students will understand OSINT principles, frameworks, and methodologies, deploy search techniques and specialised tools, conduct scraping and basic data engineering tasks, analyse information from social media and public records, and assess the credibility of open sources. Teaching is structured so that practical exercises follow theory, with handouts and reference materials provided to reinforce learning. Quizzes and weekly tests support progression, while a capstone project demonstrates participants’ ability to independently apply the full range of techniques.
Modality
The course is conducted in person across four weeks, supported by handouts, practical exercises, and quizzes. Timelines are flexible to ensure that students acquire the intended skills at a functional level.
Focus
The course emphasises foundational OSINT tradecraft, workflow, and practical application rather than dependence on specific subscription tools. Exercises and projects are designed to build functional collection capability that participants can adapt to a variety of environments.
