Overview
The Basic Analysis Course is a three weeks in-person training with asynchronous virtual content. The course leverages the latest technological tools and platforms to enhance learning experience, ensuring participants gain hands-on proficiency with cutting-edge software used in modern information gathering. Participants will explore a range of topics, from basic cyber safety to advanced analysis techniques, all while emphasising practical applications and real-world scenarios. By the end of the course, participants will possess actionable skills that can be applied in real-word intelligence and research environments.
Objective
The Basic Analysis Course is designed to equip participants with essential skills for effective Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) research. This includes enhancing cyber skills for online safety, building data literacy to understand and utilise various data types, mastering source discovery techniques for efficient information retrieval, and exploring advanced OSINT methodologies for navigating different web environments. Participants will also develop analytical skills to formulate insightful questions and assess information critically, improve their communication abilities for crafting clear reports and presentations, and understand the importance of teamwork in collaborative analysis. Finally, the course culminates in a practical capstone project, allowing participants to consolidate and apply their knowledge through comprehensive research, analysis, and briefing.
Modality
Three weeks of in-person instruction, with some of the more theoretical modules offered in a virtual format for students to complete beforehand at their own pace. Theory content will be delivered virtually for asynchronous, self-paced learning.
Focus
This course will focus on the OSINT workflow, techniques, and mindset rather than on specific subscription tools. It will also be practical and hands-on, featuring numerous exercises, team projects, and competitions, as well as a substantial capstone project at the end.
Course Outline
Fundamentals of OSINT and Web 1.0 (Asynchronous Virtual Content)
Note: This is a virtual, self-paced asynchronous content that can be done 1 week before or during the course dates.
OSINT Search Tools, Techniques, Research, and Investigations
Fundamentals of OSINT Analysis and Creating Impactful OSINT Analysis
Capstone Exercise
A substantial team project incorporating all skills and techniques, with an emphasis on workflow. Students will conduct research and present their findings using PowerPoint for the class.
Tools and Data Provided
SaaS tools and Datasets will be provided for the duration of the training via a SaaS platform, which enables easy access to virtual machines for secure internet access, credentials for third-party tools as well as to workflow documentation.
Trainees will need to have access to laptops or desktops with internet access.
Tools provided will include up to 20 SaaS platforms or datasets in the following categories:
Links to numerous freeware OSINT research technique sites that will be used during the training.
